There will always remain essentially three basic models of advertising:

1. The unavoidable ad from businesses who don't care about being annoying. The "there's no bad PR as long as they spell your name right" crowd. They just want major exposure and are willing to fill your screen for seconds while you try to find ways to click them away. This will be even more annoying on smaller screens. The ads will be more interactive, perhaps, but they'll certainly be very present.

2. The immersive ads. These are usually paid content like games, movies that have little or nothing to do with the service that's being offered. "Brought to you by" Businesses are hoping that by getting their name out there in this way you'll remember them and feel more attached to their brand. This is no different from much of today's advertising but the immersiveness of "casual gaming" (remember your phone is always with you) may have greater appeal than on your PC.

3. The personalized ad. Advertisers generate ads based on your profile and the content of the site you're looking at. Inclusion of GPS on your phone adds another ingredient to this personalizing. The small size of the screen and the "always with you" aspect of the phone will give way to completely new models of advertising. What many may like to call "'ads you want". Companies will work towards getting real "fans" who install special applications on their phone a la facebook applications, including the viral aspect.

Big Business Is Into Mobile Phone Advertising, Why Aren't You?

Some of the biggest companys are getting heavily invovled in mobile phone advertising this year. From The New York Times:

"Apple Buys Quattro, an Ad Firm
January 6, 2010, 2:18 am Apple encroached upon Google’s turf on Tuesday with its acquisition of Quattro Wireless, a mobile advertising company.

The sale, which Quattro announced, is the latest sign that the mobile phone is the next battleground for technology companies, particularly for Apple and Google, which are increasingly in competition. Apple paid close to $300 million for Quattro, according to a person briefed on the deal.
While Apple, maker of the iPhone, branched into advertising on Tuesday, Google, which is predominantly an advertising company, began selling its first piece of hardware, the Nexus One cellphone.

“You can just see the tempers rising between the two companies,” said Gene Munster, the senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray covering Internet companies. “Two years ago it was a very friendly relationship. Now just every day it gets more competitive.”

In November, Google agreed to buy AdMob, a mobile advertising network that competed with Quattro, for $750 million. Apple had also been interested in AdMob, according to people with knowledge of that deal. With Quattro, Apple will also compete in the mobile ad market with Microsoft and Yahoo.

Apple is probably less interested in profiting from ads than in making the iPhone the most attractive device for developers to build applications, analysts said.

Eighty percent of the three billion downloads from Apple’s App Store are free, Mr. Munster said. By offering a way to sell ads, Apple will help these developers — as well as developers who might build applications for a future Apple tablet — make money.

With traditional mass-media advertising mediums such as billboards, newspapers and even the Internet saturated with ads that are not targeted at individual customers and go mostly ignored, companies are looking for new advertising ventures that will connect them more effectively with potential customers.

Mobile advertising may be the panacea to the corporate marketing department’s woes, as Turkey’s large young population readily adapts to this medium.
With 63.7 million mobile subscribers as of September 2009, the ratio of mobile subscribers to the total population is only 89 percent, a relatively small market compared to the 189 percent rate of Greece -- or nearly two mobile phone lines per person. The EU average is 125 percent, illustrating that Turkey may not be as big of a mobile market as it might seem. Being the second most populated nation in Europe, however, with 71 million people -- next only to Germany’s 82 million -- means that companies like Turkcell can become the third largest mobile operator in Europe without having to aim for above-100 penetration rates.

A youthful potential

The amount of young people, the quickest adopters of new communication technology, in Turkey easily trumps the youth population in aging Europe. With 19 million young people between the ages of 15 and 29, Turkey is second only to Russia’s 34 million. This youth population towers over the entire population of many European countries and is attracting the attention of new-age advertisers looking to improve their advertisements to users’ lifestyles while connecting with them through the device youths use to connect with each other -- their mobile phones.

“Turkey is especially important for its vibrant youth markets, who tend to be early adopters of technology and media, so we find it a very exciting market to be involved in,” said Russell Buckley, vice president of Global Alliances at AdMob, one of the world’s largest mobile advertising networks. Speaking to Sunday’s Zaman, Buckley expressed his enthusiasm for the Turkish mobile advertising market, revealing that Turkish mobile phone users view 33 million ads per month through AdMob’s network alone and has grown “organically with very little focus [by AdMob] to date.” Although Turkey is a small part of AdMob’s total business -- receiving a staggering 5.6 billion ad hits from the US monthly and 627 million from customers in India -- Buckley sees promise in this young market. “Our commercial team has more recently been investing a lot of time in this thriving market, so look out for some partnership announcements in the near future.”

The growth of Turkey’s mobile advertising market came about through the use of mobile Internet portals, according to Ayhan Çobanlioglu, project and business development manager at Dataport, one of the main advertising service providers for operators. The three main operators, Turkcell, Vodafone and Avea, use such mobile portals to provide quick access to services such as email, instant messaging and social networks, an attractive service for youths looking for quick access to their virtual presence. According to Çobanlioglu, these portals paved the way for the development of Turkey’s mobile advertising industry. The ability to target advertisements according to user types and the capability of measuring responses hold the key to realizing the potential of the digitally connected youth of Turkey, Çobanlioglu highlighted.

Cashing in on ring tones

One of the most successful implementations of mobile advertising in Turkey is Turkcell’s TonlaKazan service, which allows subscribers to select branded, ad-funded content as their Ringback Tone (RBT), or a replacement to the regular ringtone that callers hear, and provides them an opportunity to win prizes depending on how many people listen to the tone. This “WinBackTone,” which is popular among young people who opt for songs by their favorite artists as their RBT, was developed by the Istanbul-based mobile advertising solutions firm 4play. The service gained global recognition with Turkcell winning the Best Mobile Advertising Service for TonlaKazan at the 14th Annual GSM Association Global Mobile Awards in February 2009.

The service also drew the attention of the mobile Internet-focused AdMob, with Buckley noting that Turkey is quickly becoming a leader in innovation in this blossoming field. “Turkey is a true global thought leader and consistently impresses other international carriers with their mobile marketing initiatives such as Turkcell’s huge 7.5 million opt-in SMS database and more recently, the ad-funded world first Ringback Tones.”

Internet and electronics giants are also seeing the potential of mobile advertisements, as firms deeply rooted in the industry are being bought up by the likes of the targeted advertisement leader Google, which is in the process of acquiring AdMob for $750 million. Apple acquired Quattro Wireless for $275 million, a competitor of AdMob, in a near rebuttal to Google’s aggressive entrance into the industry. Buckley highlighted that such an interest in the market would bode well for emerging markets, receiving investments into the sector. “Emerging countries, like Turkey, that are helping to drive the rapid growth in mobile usage worldwide will benefit from increased investments.”

It is clear that Turkey’s vibrant mobile advertising industry has as much homegrown interest as it does international. What new services and solutions will develop in this rapidly growing industry is yet to be seen, but Turkey, already well into the playing field with its innovative mobile advertising strategies, will create ripples in this new wave of advertising.

The Next Big Thing in Marketing Is Mobile Phone Marketing

Mobile applications, mobile web and SMS or text messaging are the next BIG THING! Unless you've been living under a rock, this is no real surprise. Just look at how many iPhone, Blackberry and smart phones are out there and how many of them are super glued all day long. Whether it's a good thing or not, text messaging and mobile web is now our way of life. And as with every new technology advancement that takes off and finds mass numbers of rabid fans, the smart business owners have found ways to capitalize and profit it. Introducing mobile phone advertising to such a connected crowd was destined to happen and did very quickly. However, just like any other type of advertising, it was yet to be seen whether it could be profitable or not and to what degree of success. The New Trend Is Mobile Phone Marketing

A new trend in mobile phone content advertising is the "ad-supported" mobile phone service model. MVNO's such as Virgin Mobile USA, Xero Mobile, and Blyk offer, or plan to offer, free or subsidized mobile phone service in exchange for subscribers viewing a number of targeted advertisements that are relevant to the subscriber. These MVNO's utilize a "one person per presentation" model. The relevancy of any given advertisement is based on user demographics, questionaires, and the like. Leap Wireless Internationl Inc. holds a patent (Owensby 6,647,257)that allows a subscriber to subsidize his/her calls by viewing advertising, and utilizes a number of subscriber centric factors.

The Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) carried out a survey of its members in 2006 where 81% of respondents expected successful advertising models to cut prices or fund the consumption of entertainment content on mobile phones.

While advertising via a mobile phone is still relatively new, inventors have developed ways to use a mobile phone to present advertising to persons standing near a mobile phone user while the user speaks in a non-handsfree mode. Bayne's invention (Bayne, U.S. Pat. Application Nos. 20050239448 & 20050239495)teaches providing a mobile phone user with incentives (e.g. discounted talk time, free content, etc.) for allowing the phone to be used as a mini-billboard by manipulating the main screen to face outward to present advertising (in an alternate embodiment the invention uses the rear facing screen). This invention differs from the conventional approach of "one person per presentation", and is based on the observation that "birds of a feather flock together" to give the advertiser multiple views per presentation and a demographic that is the same, or similar to, the subscriber. Inventor Okawa (U.S. Pat. Application 20040259599) teaches a similar invention for presenting advertising to unspecified persons near a mobile phone user, using the rear screen, while the user speaks on a mobile phone. Presentation to persons other than the user will likely be used to increase market share in low-income/high-population areas, as well as provide a line extension for ad-supported MVNO's.

A new approach to mobile content advertising is the use of viral marketing. Through specially designed programmes users can send recommendations for mobile content they like to their contact lists. Passa Parola, the Italian version of Meyou, has reached a total of 800000 registered users, by the use of viral marketing alone. From: "MoConDi has the viral say".

History Of Mobile Phone Ads and How To Ride The 1st Marketing Money Wave

The first easily-customisable aspect of the mobile phone were the operator logos – small, monochrome images that show the logo of the mobile network operator (such as Vodafone) by default. These were often replaced by a person's name or a small symbol.

As handset manufacturers introduced better ring tones and audio capabilities the ring tones became the most common method of customising the phone. Web sites containing ring tones of popular songs and tunes started appearing, with many of them providing the service free of charge and with little or no advertising at all – their popularity grew mainly through word of mouth. However, these sites soon started charging a small fee for the privilege. The next step was to advertise these services.

Some companies started large mass media campaigns to advertise the fact that they had the latest tunes and largest collections of ring tones. One of the biggest advertiser is the German company Jamba! (known as Jamster! in some countries), known for the Sweety the Chick and Crazy Frog ringtone characters. After months of public complaints, the British Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled on 21 September 2005 that many of the advertisements must be shown only after 9 p.m. The primary intention of this was to prevent the company from targeting young people in its campaigns.

Mobile Advertising was one of the main themes at the "3GSM World Congress" held in Barcelona, Spain in February 2007. The Mobile Entertainment Summit held there discussed whether Mobile Advertising Can Fund New Content Businesses and Resurrect Advertising.

One of the first operators to implement brand advertising campaigns was "AIS" from Thailand, where Honda has become one of the first global advertisers to use the phone's idle screen as a medium for mobile advertising. The AIS - Honda advertising campaign broadcast motorcycle and road driving safety tips and targeted millions of AIS mobile subscribers, offering a Honda moped as a prize in return for registering. The campaign utilised LiveScreen Media, a mobile advertising medium by "Celltick Technologies".

So How Does Mobile Phone Advertising Work?

Mobile phone content advertising is the promotion of ring tones, games and other mobile phone services.

Such services are usually subscription-based and use the short message service (SMS) system to join up to them. Another method is broadcasting messages to the mobile phone's idle-screen, enabling the mobile operators or advertisers to reach millions in real-time. The advertising and sale of ring tones in particular has seen a massive growth in recent years, with some commercial breaks, particularly on music television channels and in motor racing (especially NASCAR, with Sprint Nextel as the series sponsor), being dominated by such adverts. Advertising in newspapers and magazines has also become popular.

However, mobile phone advertising is banned in some outlets, especially in NASCAR. On 19 June 2003 NASCAR prohibited advertising by any new mobile phone companies who were not in the sport at the time; mobile phone companies who were involved could stay with their current teams, but once they break from their current teams, they could not advertise in NASCAR's premier series. This prohibition was a byproduct of the new ten-year contract with Nextel Communications.
